The pole is contained in a PortSafe lockable box and stands at the waters edge similar to the traditional lifebuoy ring. But unlike the lifebuoy ring, it is secure and more accurate. The system can reach someone in distress in the water in as little as 20 seconds, and up to 17 metres. It is so easy to use that members of the public will be able to carry out the rescue. The systems rigid design enables the operator to direct and control the rescue rather than expecting someone who is in the water, cold, confused and terrified to swim towards a lifebuoy ring. A contact number will be shown on the box for the public to call, to alert the emergency services and to gain access to the pole.
